Geranium Essential Oil

The Great Harmonizer

Geranium Flower

Whenever springtime begins, you are sure to see geraniums sprouting up in the gardens and containers across the city. Geranium is an astounding, extremely popular flowering plant that is widely grown for ornamental purposes.

Few interesting facts about Geranium Flower:

  • There are approximately 700 varieties of geranium, only about 10 of which supply essential oil.

  • The unique rose-like aroma is captured by harvesting just as the leaves turn yellow, previous to this, the aroma is more lemony.

  • Geranium (Pelargonium Graveolens) is native to South Africa.

  • It was introduced to Europe only in the 17th century and even then was used solely as ornaments.

  • The French chemist Recluz was the first to distill geranium leaves in 1819 and since then geranium oil became a significant fragrance ingredient, which many times substitutes rose oil.

  • In 1786, Thomas Jefferson shipped the plant from France to noted Philadelphia horticulturist, John Bartram, where the geranium finally grabbed the attention of gardeners in America.

What does geranium oil smell like?

Many people assume geranium essential oil will smell like the geraniums in their flower beds. However, the geranium essential oil is from an entirely different genus of plants, and the essential oil distillate of a high-value Geraniaceae plant, rose-scented geranium, has a very strong, pleasant, floral scent overlaid with some herbaceous, fruity-mint notes.

Geranium oil is blessed with a very delightful, comforting, rose-like, fresh, citrusy aroma. Rose-scented geranium is perfect when you feel out of sync with your own natural rhythms and need to reconnect with yourself.

Let's dive in deeper and learn all about Geranium (Pelargonium Graveolens) oil's benefits.

Mind and Emotions.

Geranium oil's regulating properties act to have a wonderfully calming and uplifting effect. It is useful in relieving and soothing stressful emotions and tension.

Traditionally, the geranium essential oil has been used in both physiological and psychological complications, including anxiety, insomnia, high blood pressure, worry, anger, frustration, restlessness, nervousness, and respiratory tract infection (PubMed).

It was found that geraniol in geranium oil had a balancing effect on the autonomic nervous system. Our modern-day lifestyle promotes living in a chronic state of stress while being subject to an increasing array of foreign and invasive environmental toxins. These two conditions are cited as primary causes of autonomic nervous system imbalances. Balance of your autonomic nervous system is essential for maintaining a healthy and fully functioning human organism - body, mind, emotions (Stiles K., The Essential Oils Complete Reference Guide., 2017).

Think of geranium when you need love and support. Like the soft pulse of a breath, the gentleness of rose, and the subtle uplifting spice of life are wrapped in its scent (Kaufmann C., Nature's Essential Oils: Aromatic Alchemy for Well-Being., 2018).

Body and Skin.

Geranium oil consists mostly of the alcohols citronellol, geraniol, and linalool, and the esters geranyl acetate and citronellyl acetate. These elements play a critical role in conferring the oil’s many therapeutic properties, for example, confer anti-microbial and immune-support properties on the user.

Citronellol and geraniol make a stand as a delectably fragrant defense against inflammation. The alcohols have been shown to suppress prostaglandin E2 —a loiterer in inflammatory sites and instigator of pain, redness, swelling, and heat (Miller M.A., Scholarly Journal).

Geranium is a gentle oil but also powerful in action. It is very user-friendly – non-toxic, non-irritant, non-sensitizing essential oil.

What does geranium oil do for your skin?

The use of Geranium essential oil is highly efficient against different dysfunctions on the skin physiology, including acne, dry skin, skin aging, dermatitis, or eczema (PubMed).

  • Geranium essential oil as a result of its alkaline character contributes to maintaining the natural sebum balance.

  • The antioxidant activity in the oil makes it great for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

  • Since it is also a natural astringent, it is non-comedogenic, helps to unclog pores, and tone the skin.

  • Geranium oil soothes skin inflammations and irritations, minimizes redness, puffiness through stimulating and cleansing the lymphatic system.
